The GMC Sierra Hybrid has been re-engineered for 2009 and are powered by a 6L, 8-cylinder gasoline engine combined with a two-mode hybrid system. The Sierra can operate in all-electric mode at speeds of up to 30 mph, exclusively on its gasoline engine, or using a combination of modes when driving conditions like steep climbs, towing and hard acceleration demand. The vehicles are offered in 2WD and 4WD configurations.

In addition, the vehicles can switch from 8-cylinder to 4-cylinder operation and use stop-start technology combined with regenerative braking to improve fuel economy and reduce tailpipe emissions. The air conditioning and power steering rely on the hybrid system for power as a way to improve the vehicle's overall fuel economy.
