Dodge Durango Hybrid Review
The 2009 Dodge Durango Hybrid is a 4WD SUV that seats 7 or 8 passengers, depending upon the interior configuration. The Dodge Durango Hybrid offers an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 in the city, 22 on the highway and a combined average fuel economy of 21, giving it the highest fuel economy rating of any Dodge SUV. According to EPA testing, the Dodge Durango HEV emits 8.7 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere annually.
Chrysler has terminated production of the Durango hybrid as part of an accelerated plant closing. This doesn't leave Chrysler out of the hybrid game altogether; the Durango hybrids were in production for two months before the plant closing was announced. Sales of the hybrid vehicles have been slow. Overall, the company has sold just 83 of the vehicles, which just recently hit dealer showrooms.

The vehicles share a hybrid power train that was jointly developed by GM, BMW and Chrysler. The Chrysler implementation gives similar performance to that of the larger GM hybrid SUVs. The Dodge Durango Hybrid is powered by a 5.7L, 8-cylinder gasoline engine and features a 399-hp two-mode hybrid drive. The vehicles offer a combined gas-electric range of up to 565 miles between fill-ups. While the engine is slightly smaller than the 6L used in the GM vehicles, the system can operate in all-electric, gasoline-only, and combined gas-electric modes to provide optimal fuel economy in a variety of driving conditions. Chrysler is expected to re-enter the hybrid vehicle market in 2010 with the Dodge RAM Hybrid. The company is also developing a number of dual-mode hybrids and all-electric vehicles that will enter production in the coming model years.
The Dodge Durango hybrids offer an optional rearview camera with a center-console view screen, hybrid-specific gauges to help drivers optimize fuel economy, electronic stability control, dual-stage front seat airbags, side-impact airbags, laminated window glass, front-and rear crumple zones, an eight-way power driver seat, 40/20/40 second row seats and 60/40 third row seats, a power lift gate, optional remote start and LED lighting.
The 2009 Dodge Durango Hybrid has an MSRP sticker price starting at $45,570 and is available at dealerships now in limited quantities.
