Subaru and Toyota Working On AWD Hybrid

Subaru and Toyota are reportedly working on an AWD hybrid vehicle that is expected to provide seating for up to five passengers. Subaru is also working independently on an all-electric test vehicle as part of its R1e program. Subaru does not intend to develop the all-electric vehicle into a consumer product, but will use it to extend the company's capacity to develop EV and PHEV technologies, perhaps as options for its existing vehicle lines.

One promising development coming from the R1e program is a rapid-charging capability that can restore an EV's battery pack to 80% capacity in about 15 minutes. Subaru will test the quick charge technology with the New York Power Authority this summer. A 15-minute recharge cycle is significantly faster than the overnight charging currently recommended by EV manufacturers and custom interfaces could be added to parking garages and lots to permit commuters to recharge easily.

Subaru and Toyota are also working together to produce a non-hybrid RWD, four-cylinder sports car with both a three-door and coupe versions. Reportedly, the engineering will be supplied primarily by Subaru, while the vehicle's styling will make up the majority of Toyota's contribution. The joint venture vehicle will be small, and will not compete with Subaru's larger 5-door WRX or its 4-door counterpart. Subaru will offer a diesel engine option for the WRX, which should increase the vehicle's fuel economy.
