120 Plus Teams To Compete In Progressive Automotive X Prize
According to the X PRIZE Foundation, more than 120 teams have filed a letter of intent with the foundation to compete for the $10 million prize in 2009. Teams have until January 1, 2009 to file a letter of intent. After registration has been completed, the X PRIZE Foundation will begin to qualify the entrants.
Those entrants that pass through the qualification stages will compete in a cross-country stage race that will begin in September 2009 in New York City. Teams range from individuals and small groups to university-sponsored student teams to major corporations. The team whose entry exceeds 100 miles per gallon, meets the organizers' strict emissions regulations and completes the race in the fastest time will win.
The goals of the Progressive X PRIZE Competition is to showcase energy-efficient technologies that can be mass-produced easily and whose costs are not prohibitive to the ordinary consumer. The X PRIZE Foundation has already sponsored competitions that resulted in the first private space ship flight. Other current competitions include the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics, and the Google Lunar X PRIZE.
