In the United States, table tennis is played as a leisurely game with long volleys. However, as a kid growing up in San Francisco's Chinatown, it was a fast paced game filled with spins, volleys and kills. Each of my friends had their own table tennis paddle and we carried them around all the time.

When I was in college, I played in a tournament for intermediate players. One of the guys I played against thought it was unfair that I used spins so I took his easy volleys and slammed them back at him. Interesting how two countries play the same sport so differently.

I think there is a movement under way to call it table tennis instead of ping-pong. As I was growing up and playing, it was always called ping-pong so I'm not sure why the change.
