I guess most of us would like to have a hybrid someday but do you try to save on gas now?
I heard on the radio there are things you can do to save on gas mileage. For instance, don't hit your breaks quick but come to a slow and gradual stop. Another one is to keep your foot off the gas as much as possible. Another is to use your cruise control even in town. Another is to keep the air at the correct levels in your tires. Are there more? Have you heard of some or actually done some and know they work? |

I do a lot of maintenance work on my Saturn to keep it in top condition. Regular stuff like changing oil, checking the air filter, checking the PCV valve, proper tire inflation, etc., always help. But the bottom line is driving style. I've learned to time the lights much better and I coast whenever I can - I have a 5-speed - and that helps to maximize my mileage in the city and highway. One more thing that helps a bunch - slow down and when at a stop, slowly accelerate.

One thing that I do is called skip-shifting. It's all based on the principle that the higher the engine speed, the more gasoline you are using. So in my Saturn, while I'm in first gear, when I slowly accelerate and get up to 2300-2500 revolutions per minute, I shift directly to 3rd gear. This immediately drops my engine speed to 1500 revs and I'm up to speed with traffic without having to use 2nd gear. Because the engine speed is lower, I'm using less gasoline.
