The PBS program "NOVA" is running a show about the cars of the future. The brothers from the radio show "Car Talk" hosts it.
It talks all about the new technology and the ways that researchers are trying to get new cars to run MUCH more efficiently. Here's the link for PBS so you can take a look at the program and try to find when it's going to air on your local PBS station. I've seen it twice so far. It was a very good show. There were lots of different technologies featured, not a single one of them a "traditional" gas engine. My favorite was the Tesla Motors car, which is going the wise route of appealing to style as well as substance. Also, it was during that part of the program that they demonstrated the strength and lightweight nature of carbon fibers. Electric engine or not, I think carbon fiber technology is the wave of the future for cars!
