Default safety

Do you think that one has to compromise with safety if he gets a hybrid car?
Are hybrid cars as much safe as conventional cars?

One of the hybrid cars that I have looked isn't currently produced in the United States because of safety issues, however I think the issues are being resolved. The car is run by compressed air and the Mexican and European models have some type of glue holding the body together.
