Default Increasing Gas Mileage Without Hybrids

Just read the article on this site:

Hybrid Mileage Without The Hybrid - Hybrid Car Chat

I think most people don't realize how much better gas mileage they can get just by driving properly. I have a bad habit of always accelerating fast.

By waiting for the exact time to accelerate, you can have economy in your fuel.

I started watching how I was driving around after I found out it affected your gas efficiency, I was surprised to find out that instead of 18-20 mpg I was easily getting around 26. And my car is not a hybrid!

Maybe it's the area I live in, but I just don't see that stop/start at red lights getting me anything but angry glares and a few fingers ...

Most people brake fast and accelerate fast.

Both of which causes a decrease in gas mileage.

I just watched a show on tailing semi trucks- something about the wind actually the lack of the wind when you are following the semi- which gives you better gas mileage. They proved that it was true. I think even if you tailed 100 feet back- you got better gas mileage.

I'm assuming that the show was Mythbusters. Yes, they proved it was true ... but also incredibly dangerous and stupid. Personally, I'm not going to risk my neck for a small bump in fuel economy!!!!

The opposite of these kinds of driving styles are the ones that are safe. You can increase you mileage by waiting for the right timw to accelerate and more than that, you can prolong the life of your brake pad or brake shoe if you avoid sudden brakes. These types of driving styles usually are the ones that causes accidents.

Agent Fred does have a point. I think the area you live in does play a role in how you will use the gas you have. I know that where I live I can definitely get more miles per gallon than I would in the city with all the stop and go that it takes to get anywhere.
