Default Newbie Question

I have a newbie question: If your hybrid car's battery that drives the electrical portion failed, could you still operate it with the combustion engine?

I'm not sure if that battery would be the same one that would provide the initial sparks to start the combustion engine.

I have known that the battery of the electric motor is separated with the ignition battery. And both are simultaneously charged during IC Engine operation.
