How Bad Will It Have To Get?

I saw the ad for the Venturi Fetish (fetish?) car. It uses the new energy technology to make a fast powerful and cool looking car. For the life of me I can't understand why people feel the need to have their cars be bigger, more powerful and sexy looking machines. I do not understand the need or the urge for such a car.

I just need a car to get me from place to place. I only want it to be safe and practical and be able to do that job well with no problems. At this point in time, I think that saving energy and helping the environment is much more important than getting a cool looking powerful car.

How bad will the gas prices have to be, how bad does the air and noise pollution have to get before we all can stop looking for new wasteful "toys" and want to have a safe car that helps the environment?

I am not being a kill joy (I hope) I really want to know how bad will it have to get before we all will refuse to drive wasteful cars?
