When I read this title-- that is the first thing that popped into my head. State parks. We have this pass (Empire Pass)- we can get into any state park for free - of course we had to pay for the pass. It saves a ton of money though. All the state parks in my area (I live about 2 miles from 1 and 20 from another) are $7 a vehicle for the day.
There is hiking, camping, volleyball, swimming, picnicking- all kinds of fun things to do. A very cheap day of fun. All parks are carry in - carry out around my area- so don't forget to bring garbage bags!
