Modified Audi A1 Concept Features Hybrid Upgrades

At the 2008 Paris Motor Show earlier this month, Audi introduced a 5-door version of last year's A1 3-door hybrid platform. The revised A1 offers a 1.4L gasoline engine with a 27-hp electric motor. While the horsepower may not seem like much, the electric motor is designed to kick in during acceleration, and provides all-electric drive for as many as 60 miles.

The modified A1 offers a top speed of 124 mph and an average fuel economy of nearly 73 miles per gallon and carbon emissions of 92g/km. In addition, the new A1 also offers a dual-clutch transmission, regenerative braking and an automatic stop/start mode, which combine to increase fuel efficiency about 30%.

The modified A1 also features 18-inch wheels, Audi's magnetic shock damping system, dual mode driving – to optimize fuel economy or to achieve optimal acceleration, an onboard vehicle monitoring system that can let the driver know the status of the vehicle when the car is parked, an integrated navigation system, and LED head- and taillights.

Audi may use the A1 platform to launch additional hybrid models in both Europe and the US.
