Antro Solo Offers Solar Diesel-Electric Hybrid
A Hungarian company is showing off a solar diesel-electric hybrid vehicle that seats three and features a driver-in-the-middle design. The manufacturer, Antro Solo, says the prototype receives more than 100 mpg in city driving, a whopping 157 mpg on the highway and has a top speed of 87 mph. The three-seater is made entirely of carbon fiber and composite materials
The Antro Solo incorporates a large solar array to help recharge the battery and extend the vehicle's electric range. In addition to the boost from Sol, the Antro Solo comes with pedals that the passengers can crank to help top off the battery. The company says it can produce the vehicle for about $18,000 and is considering making a six-seater.
The company has not indicated that it intends to enter the vehicle in the Progressive X-Prize competition, but the car would qualify in the alternative competition. A mainstream-class entry would need to seat four passengers.
