Chevrolet Hybrids
In 2005 Chevy introduced the Chevrolet Equinox Hybrid, one of the first hybrid SUVs on the market, coming in behind the Chevy Tahoe. However, Equinox is no longer available to build and price on Chevy’s web site and little information is available on the vehicle. It’s hard to tell whether the Equinox hybrid ever truly made it to mass market and whether we’ll see it again in the future with some major improvements. The original Equinox hybrid was slated to use a hybrid system similar to the Chevy Tahoe hybrid and also was rumored to have a 30% boost in fuel economy over its conventional counterpart.
Chevrolet currently offers the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid and the Chevy Malibu Hybrid. The Chevy Tahoe hybrid could be pegged as one of the worst hybrid vehicles on the market since its fuel economy barely breeches 20 miles per gallon. But the Chevy Malibu hybrid can be pegged as one of the best hybrid vehicles coming in at a paltry $22,790 and achieving more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
Chevrolet is getting ready to release the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid, and will be the first full sized pick-up truck to be introduced to the mass market with a hybrid option. Chevy Silverado hybrid was initially supposed to be available for retail purchase in the fall of 2004 and one can only assume that quickly progressing technology and the slow start for the Tahoe had something to do with the push back of several years. Additionally, the demand for Chevy to be a contender in the hybrid cars market for sedans probably pushed production of the Chevy Malibu hybrid to the front of the production line.
Chevy’s Silverado hybrid will be available in limited quantities beginning Fall of 2008 and will be available for purchase by the general public in 2009. Keep watching for your first opportunity to learn more about the 2009 Chevy Silverado hybrid and your first chance to purchase the new addition to the hybrid line-up.
And for consumers who get a buzz just looking at Chevy’s Concept Camaro, get ready for a real mind-twisting tidbit: internet rumors indicate that Camaro may be going hybrid. But don’t lick your lips just yet. The design of the Camaro will require extensive technology changes to keep the car working in its classic fashion, which will boost the costs of owning this new hybrid to out-of-this-world, luxury imported car proportions.
But don’t expect to see a Chevy Impala Hybrid any time soon. Chevrolet has already started pumping its 2009 Concept Chevy Impala and it does not include the ever-increasingly important and popular hybrid system.
